A lot of people are now getting into the health and beauty regimen because it is important to be healthy. Sometimes, there are some things that can cause skin problems which might be uncomfortable or unsightly. One of these conditions is ichthyosis Ichthyosis, also known as fish scales disease, is a skin disorder characterized by dryness, scaling, and sometimes reddening. This condition most often appears on the body surface such as arms and legs but can also affect other areas such as the face and torso. This condition is also known as ichthyosiform erythroderma, and the general term "ichthyosis" includes several related disorders. There is no cure or treatment for ichthyosis; however, patients may be able to manage the condition through a variety of treatments. 1) Treating the underlying causes: If ichthyosis is a result of a medical disease, such as lupus or Sjögren syndrome, an effective treatment will need to be administered by a doctor. In addition to medications prescribed by a health care professional, some patients may also benefit from treating the skin conditions that occur with ichthyosis by following a moisturizing regimen or wearing sunblock sunscreen daily. 2) Treating the symptoms: If ichthyosis is caused by dry skin, the treatment will need to address the symptoms. A moisturizing lotion may improve dry skin and reduce scaling in some patients. Benzoyl peroxide cream may also be beneficial in treating dry and itchy scaling and flaking skin for some patients. 3) Treating hyperkeratosis: Hair follicles that are irritated by scratching, rubbing, or chemical burns may become squamous eruptions (hyperkeratoses) which can also occur in ichthyosis because of dryness. To treat the hyperkeratoses, the skin beneath should be cleaned daily with warm water and soap, followed by an application of topical lotion to soften the scales of hyperkeratosis. Sunlight or aminolevulinic acid (ALA) may also help to loosen the scales on the skin. 4) Moisturizing: Improving natural skin hydration is important for ichthyosis patients because it may improve the symptoms of ichthyosis. Patients who suffer from this condition, especially those with dry or scaly scalp, should apply a moisturizer daily to keep their skin hydrated. 5) Keeping the skin clean: Cleaning the skin keeps it healthy and prevents infection. Patients should bathe daily and use warm water to clean the affected area thoroughly. Using a gentle soap to wash the body, especially on visible areas such as arms, hands, and feet. Patients should then apply moisturizer or emollient to help hydrate their skin. 6) Protecting sensitive skin: Since those with ichthyosis may have sensitive skin, they should use mild soaps and other personal care products and avoid scratching or other activities that may irritate or damage their skin or cause other complications like bacterial infections. eccc085e13
